Day 3

Glenwood Springs - Yesterday was a driving adventure. When we got to Denver we ran into heavy rain and good-sized hail. As we continued west on Route 70 up over the mountains the rain turned into snow. We finally got out of the rain and into some sunshine on the way down. The next few hours were the most spectacular drive I can ever remember being on. The Aspens around Aspen were amazing. The juxtaposition of the dark green pine trees against the red rock cliffs were also amazing. Just before our destination of Glenwood Springs, we stopped at the Hanging Lake trail and took a two hour hike up to the lake and back. It was good to get out of the car and use the legs again. After the hike, we made it to Glenwood Springs in time for a quick supper and then 45 minutes of relaxing in the hot springs which the town is know for.

This morning I went out on the tamely named "Boy Scout Trail" and was brought to my knees by its soul crushing ascent. It was supposed to be a 2700 foot ascent in 3 miles but I don't think I made it to the top. The trail started to fork and I think I took the wrong one and eventually turned back and decided I didn't have time to try the other forks. It was a great run, in any event, with spectacular vistas. I thought I was a mountain runner until I went up this one, after which I discovered I was merely a hill runner.

More relaxing in the hot springs after breakfast and now we will take off to Grand Junction.

  1. That first picture totally made me envious. I think you guys are headed to Yellowstone, so here's a quick tip -- everything is EXTREMELY beautiful, but smells like sulfur. You can't fully appriciate my warning now, but you will....
